|Ep. 24| Charmaine, Queen in the North Podcast.

Updated: Jul 20, 2021

Charmaine Tafadzwa Willy

Charmaine exudes the charisma of superstar on set and studio. A playfulness of a young heart, the humility of a true African princess who has hints of an old school Hip Hop mixed with a contemporary flavour which sets her apart from all her musical peers. She is not your typical girl on the street, vibrant colour hair-do's and extra long clip-on nails and an extreme BUT classy sense of dressing that will definitely grab your attention, if her music doesn't do that first.

Charmaine is a bowl of energy coco puffs with milk infused with a Gatorade and will leave you with nothing but an attraction towards her music and life story. She shares the joys and disappointments of her life without fear and accepts that what she has today is an accumulation of all that she has had to endure.

"It was all a dream" she says as she explains how it all came about. She used to sing in the choir, largely because Charmaine's dad played the keyboard in the Church but it wasn't planned at all. It wasn't until she decided to take a chance on an opportunity to sing for a A&R person from Warner whom she managed to impress but turned down the opportunity because she felt insecure about her looks and age. It all felt too much although it was something that could potentially (and eventually did) change her life.

After going on a four year hiatus of "nothing" meaning no writing of any music and no participation within the music industry, she decided to come back into the fold because she "needed to be a superwoman to her son" who helped her shape perspective and feelings towards the music once again.

"It felt right" she says and indeed it shows in the amount of recognition that she has received ever since releasing her first EP.

Riding high on her new EP, Hood Avant Garde , the new "queen in the north" is a mixture of good vibes and well manicured raps that defy her age and times. The year/s of the pandemic has seen so much happen around the world and in the midst of all this chaos and gloom one particular trend is true. The period has become a haven for artists looking at slowly but imapctfully introdu

There was a lot that we needed to discuss and get to know from Charmaine and the podcast did justice to that and in the process we learnt a few things that make our rising superstar a lot more loveable than before.

5 Things you didn't know about rapper Charmaine

  1. She got ran over by a car at the age of 4. It makes her jaws uneven.

  2. She hates oranges but enjoys drinking orange juice.

  3. She wears a size four shoe and hoes to shop in the kids section.

  4. She has Trypophobia. An "aversion to the sight of irregular patterns or clusters of small holes or bumps" that makes her itch.

  5. And she is "deathly afraid of spiders".
